Originally started out as "Spaghelli" back in 2002 when two ex-West Herts College media students, Spaghelli and Phil Quinton, re-united in London and started recording an album of "punk poetry" recorded against a backdrop of crude hip-hop beats and harsh, experimental backing music to give away free at gigs, back when Spaghelli was still singer for punk/ska band CopCar PileUp.
In 2006 Spaghelli took things a step further and reworked the music for a live audience. Drummer Dave Bateman and Guitarist Steve Hearne, two former members of Phil's old indie band, Monophobia, joined the project in August 2006 and started rehearsing in Acton, west London. The Dogbytes were born.
In 2007 They recorded new band versions of four of the old synth/sample-based Spaghelli tracks with a view to creating a 4-track online EP on MySpace for friends and fans to download free.
The music proved to be too uncategorisable for most promoters or venues to consider letting the band play, particularly since the resurgence of traditional guitar-based indie music in recent years, and the band fizzled out. However one promoter gave the band a chance and Spaghelli and the Dogbytes did eventually play a one-off live gig, headlining at the Flag in Watford on Saturday 14th June 2008. It was an entertaining gig, well-attended and well-received, and the Dogbtes went out on a high note.
The band recorded their first demo, a four-track EP entitled The Storm at Gracelands Studios in 2007. All of the tracks are available for free download or streaming on MySpace.com, along with videos, links, lyrics and old Spaghelli demos.
